Spotlight On: Micromosaic Jewellery

Exquisitely intricate and impossibly delicate, micro mosaic is the art form that whispers opulence. Originally making waves in the 18th and 19th centuries, micro mosaics found their home in jewellery that was as intricate as it was luxurious. Crafted from countless shards of opaque vitreous glass or enamel—known as tesserae—each piece is a celebration of precision and artistry.

In a dazzling spectrum of colours referred to as smalto, the tesserae are meticulously arranged with fine-tipped tweezers, allowing the mosaicist to conjure breathtakingly detailed motifs—floral fantasies, romantic ruins, and sublime symbols rendered with microscopic flair.

By the mid-1800s, a dramatic new backdrop emerged: lustrous black Belgian marble, carefully carved and polished to perfection. This luxurious canvas offered a striking contrast, heightening the vibrancy of every tile and elevating each creation into an objet d’art. Today, echoes of that rich legacy live on in the micro mosaic treasures available at Deheb—where history, craftsmanship, and couture collide.
